Capturing the spirit of a beloved pet in a portrait is a special way to preserve memories that last a lifetime. Whether your furry friend is still by your side or has passed on, a pet portrait turns moments into a lasting tribute. This guide walks you through the process of creating a meaningful pet portrait, from gathering inspiration to the final brushstroke.

Choosing the Right Photo or Reference
The foundation of any great pet portrait is a strong reference image. The photo you select should clearly show your pet’s unique features and personality. Here are some tips for choosing the best reference:
Focus on expression: Look for photos where your pet’s eyes and face show emotion. This helps the portrait feel alive.
Good lighting: Natural light works best to reveal details and colours.
Clear details: Avoid blurry or dark photos. Sharp images help capture fur texture and markings.
Multiple angles: If possible, gather several photos from different angles to understand your pet’s shape and posture.
If you don’t have a perfect photo, consider taking new pictures or please ask if I can help.
Planning the Composition
Before starting the artwork, I plan how your pet will be positioned and what background will complement the portrait if requested.
Pose: Choose a pose that reflects your pet’s personality—playful, calm, or alert.
Background: Keep it simple to focus on your pet, or add elements like favourite toys or nature scenes. I mostly paint the pet without a background but I am happy to discuss this.
Size and format: Decide on the portrait’s dimensions and what wood you are happy for me to use. for pet portraits I generally use wood slice but I am happy to discuss an alterative.
Sketching a rough layout helps visualize the final piece and make adjustments early.
Capturing Personality and Emotion
A pet portrait is more than a likeness; it’s about capturing the essence of your pet. I start by paying attention to:
Eyes: The eyes often reveal the soul so I spend extra time rendering them with care.
Expression: Small details like the tilt of the head or the curve of the mouth add character.
Fur texture: I use varied brush strokes or pencil marks to mimic the softness or coarseness of fur.
Colour accuracy: A variety of photographs help me to match your pet’s unique coat colours and patterns for authenticity.
Step-by-Step Painting or Drawing Process
Here’s a general workflow to create a pet portrait:
Initial sketch: I lightly outline the pet’s shape and key features.
Blocking in colours or shading: I apply base colours or tones to establish the overall look.
Adding details: I build up layers to define fur, eyes, nose, and other features.
Refining edges and highlights: I sharpen important lines and add highlights to bring the portrait to life.
Final touches: I review the portrait for balance and make any adjustments.
I find it helpful to take breaks during the process to view my work with fresh eyes.
Preserving and Displaying Your Portrait
