My art story

Art has always been a part of my life, but finding the right path to share it with others can be a challenge. This story is about a journey that blends passion, family, and nature into a unique art business. It shows how creativity can grow in unexpected ways and how inspiration can come from the people and environment around us.

Early passion and education

The love for art began with formal study at Southampton University, where a BA Hons degree was earned. This time was filled with learning different techniques and exploring creativity. Yet, after graduation, the path to becoming a freelance artist was unclear. Many graduates face this uncertainty, and it often leads to exploring other careers.

Career detours and life changes

Instead of jumping straight into art, the journey took a turn into retail management. This experience built skills in organization, customer service, and business, which later proved useful. After some years, a new career as a qualified dental nurse began. This change brought stability and a different kind of fulfilment.

During this time, family life grew with two children. Raising them became a priority, and art took a backseat. But the creative spark never faded.

Returning to art with a fresh perspective

After the birth of my second child, the desire to paint returned. This time, the goal was to create something different. Inspiration came from my husband, a carpenter, who introduced the idea of painting on wood. Starting with offcuts from his workshop, this new medium offered a fresh canvas and a connection to nature.

Using wood as a base for art brought a new dimension. The texture, grain, and warmth of wood added character to each piece. It also aligned with a commitment to sustainability by choosing materials carefully.

Building the business with sustainable materials

As demand grew, sourcing wood expanded beyond offcuts to include a sustainable supplier. This ensured a steady supply of different types of wood while respecting the environment. The focus remained on original artwork inspired by nature.

Expanding the product range

Markets and exhibitions provided opportunities to connect with customers and showcase work. Feedback inspired the introduction of printed artwork on wooden items where possible such as cards, decorations, and keyrings. These smaller items made the art more accessible and allowed for creative variety.

Plans for the future include expanding this printed range and continuing to attend markets throughout the year. Collaborations with small retail spaces like Aldermoor Community Farm, Paul Dumper Creations, and Stuff So Lovely inside Silversprings Garden Centre have helped reach new audiences.

Life in Southampton and connection to nature

Living in Southampton with my husband and two children aged 11 and 14 offers a rich environment for creativity. Our large garden with oak trees attracts wildlife, providing endless inspiration. This close relationship with nature is at the heart of my artwork.

Looking ahead

The focus for the coming year is clear:

  • Continue creating original paintings on wood

  • Grow the printed merchandise range

  • Participate in markets and exhibitions regularly

This approach balances artistic expression with practical business growth.
